2. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
Past Continuous Tense adalah tense yang biasanya digunakan untuk menyatakan:
1). Dua kejadian atau aktifitas yang terjadi di waktu yang sama, akan tetapi satu kejadian atau aktifitas dimulai lebih awal dan sedang berlangsung saat kejadian atau aktifitas lain terjadi. Past Continuous Tense ini digunakan dalam bentuk kalimat majemuk dimana salah satu kalimatnya berfungsi sebagai klausa keterangan waktu. Kalimat majemuk tersebut digabungkan dengan kata penghubung (conjunction) 'when' atau 'while' yang artinya ialah 'ketika'. Bentuk pasangan pada kalimat past continuous tense ini adalah simple past tense.

Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:
:
Using When = 'ketika'
(+) S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement  + When + Simple Past
      Mr. Roheli was walking down the street when it began to rain.
(-)  S + was/were + not + V-ing + Object/Complement + When + Simple Past
      Mr. Roheli was not walking down the street when it began to rain.
(?)  was/were + S + V-ing + Object/Complement + When + Simple Past
      Was Mr. Roheli walking down the street when it began to rain?
      Yes, he was - No, he wasn't

atau

(+) When + Simple Past, S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complemet
     When it began to rain, Mr. Roheli was walking down the street.
(-) When + Simple Past, S + was/were + not + V-ing + Object/Complement 
     When it began to rain, Mr. Roheli was not walking down the street.
(?) When + Simple Past,  was/were + S + V-ing + Object/Complement
     When it began to rain, was Mr. Roheli walking down the street?
     Yes, he was - No, he wasn't

Using While = 'ketika'
(+) While S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement, Simple Past
      While Mr. Roheli was walking down the street, it began to rain.
(-)  While S + was/were + not + V-ing + Object/Complement, Simple Past
      While Mr. Roheli was not walking down the street, it began to rain.
(?)  While S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement, Simple Past
      While Mr. Roheli was walking down the street, Did it begin to rain?
      Yes, it did - No, it didn't

atau

(+) Simple Past while S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement
      It began to rain while Mr. Roheli was walking down the street
(-)  Simple Past while S + was/were + not + V-ing + Object/Complement
      It began to rain while Mr. Roheli was not walking down the street
(?)  Simple Past while S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement 
      Did it begin to rain while Mr. Roheli was walking down the street?
      Yes, it did - No, it didn't

2). Menyatakan suatu kejadian atau aktifitas yang sedang berlangsung diwaktu yang spesifik dimasa lalu. Waktunya lebih spesifik dari simple past.

Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:

(+) Adverb of time, S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement
      Last year at this time, Mr. Roheli was teaching English.
(-)  Adverb of time, S + was/were + not + V-ing + Object/Complement
      Last year at this time, Mr. Roheli was not teaching English.
(?)  Adverb of time, was/were + S +V-ing + Object/Complement
      Last year at this time, was Mr. Roheli teaching English?
     Yes, he was - No, he wasn,t

3). Kedua kejadian atau aktifitas sedang berlangsung secara bersamaan dimasa lalu. Dalam hal ini, kita hanya menggunakan kata penghubung (conjunction) 'While' yang bermakna 'Sementara atau Sedangkan'

Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:

Using While = 'Sementara'
(+) While S + was/were + V-ing + O/C, S + was/were + V-ing + O/C
      While Mr. Roheli was teaching in a campus, his wife was taking care of their son.
(-)  While S + was/were + not + V-ing + O/C, S + was/were + not + V-ing + O/C
      While Mr. Roheli was not teaching in a campus, his wife was not taking care of their son.
(?)  While S + was/were + V-ing + O/C, was/were + S + V-ing + O/C
      While Mr. Roheli was teaching in a campus, was his wife taking care of his son?
      Yes, she was - No, She wasn't

Using While = 'Sedangkan'
(+)  S + was/were + V-ing + O/C while S + was/were + V-ing + O/C
      Mr. Roheli was teaching in a campus while his wife was taking care of their son.
(-)  S + was/were + not + V-ing + O/C while S + was/were + not + V-ing + O/C
      Mr. Roheli was not teaching in a campus while his wife was not taking care of their son.
(?)  S + was/were + V-ing + O/C while was/were + S + V-ing + O/C
      Was Mr. Roheli  teaching in a campus while his wife was taking care of his son?
      Yes, He was - No, He wasn't

4). Dalam sebagian kasus, Past Continuous Tense dan Simple Past Tense memiliki makna yang sama.

Simple Past Tense
(+) S + V-2 + Object/Complement
     Mr. Roheli taught English this morning.
(-) S +did + not + V-1 + Object/Complement
     Mr. Roheli didn't teach English this morning.
(?) Did + S + V-1 + Object/Complement?
     Did Mr. Roheli teach English this morning?
     Yes, He did - No, He didn't
Past Continuous Tense
(+) S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement
     Mr. Roheli was teaching English this morning.
(-) S + was/were + V-ing + Object/Complement
     Mr. Roheli wasn't teaching English this morning.
(?) Was/were + S + V-ing + Object/Complement?
     Was Mr. Roheli teaching English this morning?
     Yes, He was - No, He wasn't
